Steve Fisher – SDSU Basketball Head Coach

October 30, 2014 at 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm

Steve Fisher is beginning his 16th season as head coach of San Diego State University.  No head-coaching career, at any level, started quicker than that of Fisher. Six games into his head-coaching career with Michigan, he was undefeated and sporting a national championship ring. Fisher’s eight-plus seasons at Michigan produced a 184-82 (.692) record, nine postseason tournament berths and three trips to the NCAA championship game, including the magical run to the 1989 national title.
His accomplishments may be even greater at San Diego State. In 2001-02 he led the Aztecs to the postseason for the first time since 1985 and for just the fourth time ever. The 21 wins were second most for the school as a Division I program and the most since 1985. Those numbers came after just three seasons with the program.  He followed that up with a third consecutive season with a .500 or better record in 2002-03 and led SDSU back to the postseason for the second consecutive season for only the second time in the school’s Division I history. In addition, SDSU claimed its first Division I postseason victory with a win in the NIT.
In 2006-07, he led SDSU to the MW regular season and tournament crowns and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. That team finished with a Division I then-school-record 24 wins. In the 2013-2014 season, the Aztecs matched their best-ever finish in the NCAA tournament despite being picked to finish in fourth place in the MW preseason poll and not receiving a single vote in either major preseason top-25 rankings. En route to its league-leading eighth conference championship, San Diego State tied the school record with 20 consecutive victories before winning the second-most games in school history (31). SDSU completed the 2013-14 campaign with a 31-5 record, won the Mountain West regular-season crown and appeared in the NCAA Sweet 16.  Fisher has also taken the Aztecs to the NIT four times, including their run to the national semifinals in 2009. San Diego State has currently been to the postseason eight straight years.
Only 13 coaches have taken more teams to the Final Four, including just five that are still active. He is one of three coaches to take three squads to the Final Four in the first five years of a head-coaching career, and one of just six coaches to lead a team to a NIT title as well as the NCAA.
Fisher, the 14th head coach in Aztec history, is married to the former Angie Wilson, another former teacher at Rich East High School. They have two sons. Mark is a Michigan graduate who is in his fourth year as an assistant coach and ninth season overall at SDSU. Jay is a 2008 graduate from the University of Southern California.

Coach Fisher was named the 2014-15 recipient of the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.  It is a small, exclusive club of the biggest names in college basketball, and the opening ante is generally a national championship.
